How the self-employment tax calculator works

SE tax = 15.3% ร— 92.35% of net profit (12.4% Social Security up to the wage base and 2.9% Medicare). Half of SE tax is deductible. Income tax is then calculated on profit minus half of SE tax and the standard deduction.

Example

Using the default inputs (Net self-employment profit: $90,000; Filing status: Single; Other income (W-2, etc.): $0.00; Apply 20% QBI deduction: Yes), the calculator returns total federal tax of $18,608. Change any field above to see your own result and charts update instantly.
